We held our 19th Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2022 on Saturday October 15, 2022, from 9 to noon. This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City. The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
The attendees at today’s workshop (25) included Harley, Bob, Kathie, Jerry, Patsy, Stu, Rick, Grant, Mary Jo, Al, Lon, Henry, Nick, Rollie, Norma, Jim Brown, Julian, John, Bel, Ken, Russ, Lauree, Darwin, Ken, and Don.
Today Jerry cut toys using a scroll saw, and Rollie cut dogs on the bandsaw.
Patsy, Mary Jo, Norma and Shirley hand sanded 52 Turtle Banks that had been sealed with shellac. They now are ready for final spraying and installing plexiglass covers.
Six boxes of toys were sanded and are now ready for spraying. Turtle banks (52) were completed at home and returned by Rick ready for hand sanding. These were hand-sanded today and are now ready for sealing. Additionally, Patsy returned sanded airplane wings.
Harley, John, Julian, and Bel along with Lon, Henry, and Jim’s efforts, installed wheels on 198 toys today.
Lon and Henry installed ears and wheels on puppy dogs.
Jerry installed pegs in tugboat hulls. Stu sanded the pegs flush with the bottom of the hull with the Rigid Sander. Patsy and Mary Jo, Kathie, Don and Norma hand-sanded the tugboat cabins. Nick installed tugboat cabins on the hulls. Jerry installed stacks on the tugboat subassembly making the “tugboat”. Two boxes of tugboats were completed today. Tugboat building will continue next workshop.
Nick finished installing airplane wings on fuselages. Jim Brown installed wheels on the airplane sub-assembly to make the “airplane”. Airplane building will continue next workshop, as one more box remains to have wheels installed.
Outside today, there was power sanding and round-over routering in 55 degree weather. Many boxes of toys were worked on, moving them to the next operation. Blocks were sanded and routered today. We are planning to fill 40 bags with 20 blocks each. Al, Ken, Russ, Rollie and Stu made up the parking lot crew.
Gary Graves texted that he was in Colorado today picking up “tops” made for our Toy Program by a woodturner friend.
Julian loaded up three boxes of parts for the jewelry boxes to work on at his home workshop.
Kathie hand-sanded the small cradles this past week with wet/dry 400 grit sand paper. She added dolls and small quilts and packaged them up and placed them into inventory.
Grant and Rick reworked a bookcase donated by Ron earlier this week. They removed a couple of shelves and repositioned others leaving three shelves 12 inches apart. They will add a pegboard back and a coat of paint next week. This will supplement the storage capability of our Woodworking Library.
At the end of the day, there were 6 boxes of toys ready to be sealed with shellac, eight boxes of toys ready for final spraying, and one box of basketball game bases complete with launchers ready for the next step, with one box of bases drilled with post holes, launcher holes, and string holes.
